Prager on "Racist" Politics

I believe Dennis Prager has hit the nail right on the head with this week's piece on the way the Left is using race in this election. It's dangerous. I can't help but recall the dream (or, nightmare) that I had about the reaction to an Obama loss.

Scary.

I think there is a lot of hyperbole in Dennis Prager's piece, not to mention a huge straw man. The reason some suspect that race is what may prevent Obama from winning isn't because people (even liberals) believe that the majority of the country espouses their views. Rather, it is because of the historical norm that in poor economic times, the party in power suffers. So for Obama not to have a clear lead at this point bucks the historical trend in presidential elections, and some have been led to ponder the reasons. Remember, not all Democrats are liberal. There are many who are blue collar, working class, pro-union and identify with the Democratic Party's economic positions, but are social conservatives and not necessarily socially conscious. The strongest opposition to affirmitive action came from unions. It's a curious thing that they'd be turning their backs on a candidate who most closely represents their values when it comes to labor and the economy, especially during rough times. So it is not outside the realm of possibility that a good number of Dems and independents are holding Obama's race against him.
